Google Business Profile in Morocco: optimising your listing to show up on Google Maps
Categories, photos, reviews, posts, NAP consistency, calls and WhatsApp: how to turn a Google Business Profile into a source of customers in Morocco.
To optimise a Google Business Profile in Morocco, you need to claim and verify it, choose the most precise primary category, complete every field (hours, services, area, attributes), regularly publish real photos, collect and answer reviews, keep the same name, address and phone number everywhere (NAP consistency) and make contact immediate: call, directions, website, WhatsApp. That is the foundation for appearing in Google’s local results and on Google Maps when a customer searches for a service nearby.
Claim and verify the listing
Many businesses already have a listing created automatically or by a customer, without controlling it. The first step is to claim it from a Google account owned by the business, then verify it using the method Google offers. Then add your colleagues or your agency as managers rather than sharing a password. If several listings exist for the same place, report the duplicates: they split your reviews and blur the information.
Name, address, phone: NAP consistency
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. These three details must be identical on the listing, on the website, on Instagram and Facebook and in directories. In Morocco, addresses are written in many different ways: choose one official version (street, number, neighbourhood, city) and use it everywhere. Place the map pin exactly on the entrance, not in the middle of the neighbourhood.
- Use the real business name without adding keywords: it is against Google’s rules.
- Choose a single spelling of the name, in Latin or Arabic script, and stick to it.
- List a number that is actually answered during opening hours.
- Update every platform on the day you move or change number.
Choose the right categories
The primary category is one of the most important settings on the listing. Choose the most precise one that describes your core activity: “spa” rather than “beauty”, “Moroccan restaurant” rather than “restaurant”. Then add secondary categories only for activities you genuinely offer. Looking at the categories used by well-ranked competitors in your city gives good leads.
Description, services and hours
The description should simply say what you do, for whom and where. Then list your main services or products, each with a short description: these help Google match the listing to the right searches. Fill in the relevant attributes (accessibility, card payment, booking) and keep hours up to date, including special hours during Ramadan, Eid and public holidays. A listing showing “open” in front of a closed door costs a customer and often a negative review.
Photos and videos: show the real place
Photos help customers choose and find the place. Avoid stock images: they reassure no one. Add new visuals regularly, because a living listing inspires more confidence than one frozen for years.
- The façade and entrance, so people recognise the place when they arrive.
- The interior, the reception and the spaces where the service happens.
- The team at work, with their consent.
- Products or services, in natural light.
- The logo and a cover image consistent with the brand identity.
- Short videos that show the atmosphere.
Reviews: ask, respond, learn
Reviews influence both local ranking and the customer’s decision. Ask for them at the right moment, just after a successful experience, with a short link or a QR code at reception. Reply to all of them, positive and negative, preferably in the language of the review: French, Arabic or Darija. Faced with criticism, a calm and concrete reply reassures future customers more than silence. Never buy fake reviews and never offer anything in exchange for a rating: it is forbidden by Google and risky for the listing.
Posts and updates
Posts let you publish an offer, an event or news directly on the listing. They show the business is active and give people a reason to click. A simple rhythm, for example a post with each new offer or season, is enough; what matters is that the information stays accurate and current.
Calls, WhatsApp, booking: make contact immediate
A well-ranked listing must also convert. Check that the call button dials the right number, that the website link points to a useful page rather than a generic home page, and add a booking or ordering link if your category allows it. In Morocco, many customers prefer to message on WhatsApp: the page the listing links to should offer a WhatsApp button on the first screen. Add UTM parameters to the website link to measure visits coming from Google Maps.
Connect the listing to the website
The website must confirm what the listing says: same name, same address, same phone number, same hours. A contact page or local page with an embedded map, a description of the neighbourhood and LocalBusiness structured data helps Google make the connection. The listing’s statistics (calls, direction requests, website clicks) then show what works.
A Google listing isn’t a form filled in once: it is the shopfront your customers see before your door.
Monthly checklist
- Hours checked, including upcoming special hours.
- New photos added.
- Every review from the month has received a reply.
- At least one post published if there is an offer or news.
- Edits suggested by third parties reviewed.
- Call, direction and click statistics noted and compared with the previous month.
